METAL HAMMER review of The Plague Symphony album
Blast-beat ridden blackened death.
THIS Coventry crew have several strings to their bow and they’re not afraid to show them off. First and foremost they are purveyors of some very fine imported death metal/grind. Fast, but not overly technical, this mini album has some tremendous blast-beat ridden passages that occasionally bring to mind bits of Cannibal Corpse and Decapitated, although the thin production also suggests classic Norwegian black metal. Then there’s melody, coming, perhaps inevitably, from the school of At The Gates which contrasts favourably with the grind-esque harshness of the vocals/ There’s – gulp – beatdowns too, but it’s a great relief to hear a band that uses them only very sparingly. Which, somewhat refreshingly, means that they actually make an impact for once.
